Status Updates From The Ranger, and Other Stories

I can’t say that young women come across particularly well in these stories—more of a hazard than a source of health. They may become wives and mothers eventually but as pretty, shapely, and single, they all seem a source of unrest in Gray’s cowboys. Just finished the last of the stories and liked it best. The young schoolmarm is tricked into coming out from Missouri but finds herself the Bel of the Ball.

These are my first Zane Grey Tex’s. One cover I saw for this anthology had a cowboy and a prairie woman holding hands. Romance is the dominant quality of the first two stories. Likable characters. Gray clearly had a stronger eye for the ladies than L’Mour
