Is it just me, or does our main character seem very indifferent to all of the horrible things that have happened to him?

Started pretty interesting and intense then became too convenient. The conflict lost its tension. I feel like everything will wrap up too neatly in the end....

We can see full well our course in life, and it scares us, so we run away time and again. p335
