Within 50 pages we’ve made it through the drudgeries of family history, read 5 early Hitchcock stories in their entirety, and are officially at the point where he is beginning to make films, yet all of this background still feels comprehensive, nothing significant seems to have been glossed over. Very much enjoying this so far.

Far too early to tell if this will be any good, but my initial impression is that I like McGilligan’s approach so far. Interrogating the “official” Hitchcock narrative as well as other accounts, acknowledging contradictions without trying to paint a definitive picture of the unknowns; this is how a biographer should treat their sources.
