This story is set in the time of 1895. Since I just started this book it is unclear, but I think that the main character in Ji-nah. Ji-nah seems very 'ahead of her time' meaning she seems that she is more modern, similar to a person that you might find today. She doesn't want to work in the house all day when she marries, she wants to have a job.
