Beryl was scheming to get Rushton to believe she loved him. In the end, Beryl gave Maggie the encouragement she needed. Maggie had been accepted to med school but had lied about being rejected. They found the money and used it to pay for Maggie to go to med school in Philadelphia. They are expecting another baby.

Beryl is on her way to stir trouble. Connor wants to let the railroad come for the conveniences it brings. Maggie doesn't want anything to change because of her. Beryl has black bag and knows what is inside and won't let the bag go.

Connor finds out about baby after thieves capture Maggie. All 3 go back to double H. They dance around things for about a month, then confess to loving each other. Meridith born around Christmas and contentment sets in at ranch. Maggie nurses burned ranch hand bringing her doctor desires forward in everyone's mind.

On the train, things going badly. He's mad about her aborting the baby. That's what she told him, but there are many hints, some obvious, that she is still pregnant. She is lonely and self-pitying while he is enjoying the freedom. Neither he nor she think she would do well out west, but she is still determined to study with Dancer Tubbs.
