A moving reminder that the inspiration to write and the outlines of character can come from the most unexpected places.

Tho a huge fan of Smith's work, I'd never encountered this title. Then, in short succession, 3 seperate humans recommended it as a companion read to move out of writer's doubt (the pesky cousin to writer's block - in which I am writing but doubting it has any merit). I am immediately transported to a cobblestone sidestreet in Paris, surely in scuffed leather, full of lament while lifting a veil of existential dread.
