Really enjoying this unique book, which I'm listening to as I get ready for bed at night. Sort of folkloric, and sort of 19thC/early20thC novelistic. Would make a great movie or perhaps better yet a PBS adaptation.

I have given this book a few chances but decided now to put to one side for a short time.
I desperately want to find out who the little girl is but aside from the animal cruelty, this book is so slow that yesterday I forgot I was even reading a book.

Can’t decide if I want to continue with this book.
I am interested in the plot- the mentions of river spirits, magic and stories- but drowning dogs in the river is not only cruel but needless to the plot.
And what kind of psychopath says ‘table pigs’ and ‘a sweet tasting small one’??

In two minds about this book so far. I am encouraged by all the 5 star reviews and I do really want to see where the plot goes- Roger spirits, wise women, stories and magic are all fascinating. However I am struggling to get past the animal abuse- drowning dogs, feeding pigs rotten potatoes and calling them stupid for looking at the character.
