Fu abbandonato all'inizio del Novecento quando si fece strada il rilevamento delle impronte digitali.

Alphonse Bertillon credeva che non esistessero 2 persone esattamente uguali e aveva individuato un sistema per registrare 5 misure primarie.

La sua documentazione comprendeva anche due fotografie standardizzate: un ritratto frontale ravvicinato e uno di profilo.

Egli definì il suo sistema "antropometria", la misurazione degli esseri umani. Il sistema divenne noto come "bertillonage" e fu adottato in Europa e USA.
