World War I, Frederic Henry is not an American soldier, an American volunteer ambulance lieutenant serving in the Italian Army Medical Corps before the US became involved in the war. He meets Miss Catherine Barkley, an English nurse at the British hospital. Their relationship begins as emotional escapism, Henry escapes the war, while Catherine escapes her grief.
