I really liked Ike Hamill's EXTINCT series but I'm struggling with this book's narrative style.

It's one of those where the protagonist's mind flits hither and yon. He recalls things that happened to him as a kid... as an adult. None of them seem to have anything to do with the story so I am floundering and remain in the center lane of the Interested Highway.
