Catherine is ALWAYS scheming - she puts in the work, and her scenes, especially the ones with René, are always entertaining. I'm talking cartoon levels of villainy to secure the male Valois line. Her and D'Anjou are out to get Henry. She's like a competent Cersei Lannister, minus the incest (but not the family trauma. She's a Medici after all!).

The standouts in this book are Catherine and D'Anjou, who, both being mutually deranged about their commitment to keeping the Valois line on the throne of France, commit to plans both strange and fascinating. I love Catherine's portrayal. Villainous icon > historically accurate.

Has taken time to get into, especially as my version is and old edition, with bad formatting, all small and cramped in the letters. All the same, I love Catherine and Rene, especially the farmer's flying squadrons. Mordi! as the Count Annibal Coconas is wont to say
