It is to all intents and purposes a macabre fable in which the cockroach becomes a corpse that yearns for an unreachable humanity (albeit abject and mean in its crushing the weak and different). Hino's rough and dirty line is expressive and fascinating, making the atmosphere raw and morbid (and also transmitting the softness / fragility of the bodies).
