The book ends with the death of the Eloi girl Weena, and the time traveler traveling furthur in time to the death of the planet. The Time traveler practically went insane when he saw the death of the planet, with the burning red giant that is the sun looming over the horizon. As he stated in the book, the last animal is a crab.
