A quiet meditation on the psychology/sociology of a serial killer. Truly horrifying how Hughes humanizes Steele to show that killers can appear externally perfectly normal.

Genuinely could end up being my favorite book of 2026! This is fascinating and idk if anything else will top it!

Last month I watched the Nicholas Ray adaptation with Humphrey Bogart. I didn’t like it very much tbh, so I’m very interested to see what the book will be like.

Re-read this during the cozy week of Decemberween. This book needs more flowers! The epitome of a cozy mystery, this is my third go-around with this. After having both read and listened to it, I can reallly see the holes in the killer's story and it's just like, so fun to watch him flop.
