‘Intef gazed down at Aya’s slumbering form. She had rolled on to her stomach & her arms had stretched out on to the floor. It was as if she were embracing the tiles, protecting her Pharaoh. Even in her sleep, it seemed, she would not cease to do her duty.’

‘He took up his hammer & chisel & began to tap on the wall. She should have been watching his technique, but she was distracted by the large sculpted muscles of his back & shoulders, which twitched & flexed with each tap.’ ....Lolz. Apparently Aya is a whore for the flow of a beautifully muscled arm, shoulder, & back. I can sympathize with that.

‘He wondered at her tumult of emotions. In the course of the hour, she had displayed shades of anger, derision, desire, sorrow & now, apparently, abashment. He had the urge to take each of her passing sentiments & stuff them into one of the empty amphorae, to be consumed on days he wished to remember what it was like to feel.’

‘“Where are you, divine soul?” she whispered. She pictured Tausret in the form of the sun embracing the land of Egypt with her light. When Aya opened her eyes, she saw Intef’s torch. It was coming towards her, a tiny ball of fire, as if he had plucked it from Tausret’s fiery head.’

‘[That mouth] was the most sensuous thing he had ever seen. When she pursed it in disapproval, it resembled nothing so much as a lotus in bloom. Her eyes, in contrast, gave nothing away. They were as blue as the sky & as distant as the clouds. Together, her lips & eyes seemed to be conspiring against his will. The hot & the cold. The carnal & the sublime.’

‘Tied beside the shrine of the deceased, she could not show herself to the priests standing at the entrance to the chamber. She could not display her tears or appeal to them for mercy. She could not see them & they could not see her. She could only whimper in misery & stare up at those terrible stars, ablaze in the mocking torchlight.’

love books set in Egypt and GG is a fave new author for me, smart and likable H and h, unusual era and well researched, would have been 5* but for pacing issues, over 1/2 of story spent stuck in the tomb just too much and denouement too fast, still a great read

Gilbert's unique hand at storytelling is definitely there. But I really need Aya to get off her "my duty is to my dead Pharaoh!" phase. She dead girl. Also wish all the politics talk would ease up. Not interested in it.
