I've been waiting to meet this Bilal, and I am not disappointed!

each chapter is its own story, susan’s writing only evolves ✨☁️

very beautiful, vivid descriptions of palestine, of the fruits and the flowers and the almond and olive trees and the harvest. feel like you didn’t really get these when she was in kuwait or jordan. I feel like there was more inner thoughts/dialogue earlier but as she grows up it gets more detailed and mature. I’m sure some of this is because of the narrator’s repression as well as the benefit of hindsight

This was what it meant to be exiled and disinherited—to straddle closed borders, never whole anywhere. To remain in one place meant tearing one’s limbs from another.
