The opening arguments are completely fascinating...but this is of course coming from someone with next to no knowledge of the genre of imperial history...
On the other hand, the writing, while mostly elegant, succumbs to extensive namedropping of references, some of which are not at all relevant to the central arguments. I did not expect that in a book of this supposed stature.
