Status Updates From Küçük Dorrit

Considering that this is one of the classics, written by arguably one of the most famous authors, when I purchased it blindly without reading its description I thought it would be a safe bet. Wrong. I understand that genre: a satire based in 19th century London. I understand it reflects Victorian values, not present day. But good god, why are the main characters so despicable? Amy is a doormat, and Arthur is blind.
