There were just two schools willing to accept my enrolment: Henry Clay and Brett Harte Junior High. I tried Henry Clay first, where both teachers and students complained about me threatening them. The principal’s words to my mother were, “He prances around with an intimidating presence as if he owned the school.”

Encouragement was an element I didn't receive enough of in my life.

In her warnings to other students about examples of bad behaviour, she pointed a finger at me: "Look at Stanley, he is not what you want to be!" If ever a teacher needed psychological testing to be allowed to teach children, she was a prime candidate.

Most Crips themselves are unaware that the original name for our alliance was “Cribs,” a name selected from a list of many options. But the short-lived label of “Cribs” was carelessly mispronounced by many of us and morphed into the name “Crips,” our permanent identity.
