Winkler will spend a hundred pages on two years and then time skip over 2 others without so much as a sentence. Such a weird history. Lots of merits but also much that is just underlining how silly his idea of a rigorous political history that tries everything to avoid narrating social history really is.

A breath of fresh air to read Winkler writing about Weimar. Clearly his area of expertise. He finally begins to give a coherent narrative again, rather than a hard to follow rather sparsely selected chronicle with teleological over- and undertones as he did when writing about the political developments of the kaiserreich. It saves the book as a whole though it does not make the middle part any less mediocre.

Engaging political history, but it is not something else than that. No social history, no economic history, no cultural history, no history of the development of mentalities apart from whatever influences elections directly - just the occasional foray into the history of antisemitism in Germany.
Expected something different, but as a political primer, this is great.
