有效的鬼扯，就像是說話者弄了一個黑盒子。如果是純粹謊言而已，通常很容易便能加以揭穿及反駁，但若鬼扯得好，便不易查證是否屬實。就像拉圖所說的黑盒子，鬼扯能夠替某種說法找掩護，不受進一步調查的威脅。

2016年時，擁有西洋棋特級大師（grand master）頭銜的蓋瑞•卡斯帕洛夫（Garry Kasparov ）用一篇推特貼文道出這套方法的梗概：「現代宣傳的重點不只是給人錯誤資訊或硬推某種主張，而是耗盡你的批判思考力，讓真理從此銷聲匿跡。」

鎖定容易煽動情緒的議題......其目標是要擴大每個政治陣營中最高分貝、最極端的聲音，並淹沒那些相對理性、有建設性的討論。一旦不同政治派系之間的分歧夠深，對話便會停止。我們對人、對制度的信任漸漸消蝕，對群體共同決定的能力失去信心，到最後，便會開始質疑民主進程。

部落知識論（知識之獲得或形成來自其部落或團體所言為真者）：真相本身跟事實與否，或是否為實際經驗所得等較不相關，而是看那些話是誰說的，以及他們所說的內容跟所屬群體的世界觀有多吻合。
