Gigi is only 15 and 'Uncle' Gaston ('Tonton') is a man of the world, with a straw hat, a chauffeured car and a thriving sugar business. It's hard not to be scathing about the way Gigi is bullied into this very unequal relationship. She's pretty much sold to him by her older female relatives in this horrible story.
