The first novel is "Past Master" by R. A. Lafferty and ooo boy are we for sure in a new era from the early sixties. Mysticism and consciousness are major themes, there's a lot of uncertainty over what is real and what isn't, and all people apparently swap genders when they are in FTL. (Though this is handed with baroque obliqueness and I have THINGS to SAY.)
