As this book progresses I’m annoyed by how lengthy the examples are which the author uses to make a point. I can see how this storytelling-style is effective in his classes. But, as a reader, it feels like he doesn’t have many original points to make, when after three pages of a play’s backstory he basically says, “See? That’s what I mean.”

regarding classics:
“We catch our breath at the places where the breath was always caught.” -Tom Stoppard
Four is the least impactful of the essays so far, for me. But I will remember that. ^^^

“But surely to encounter texts from the past is a relatively nonthreatening, and yet potentially enormously rewarding, way to practice encountering difference.”
