Status Updates From King and the Dragonflies

(YAL) I really enjoyed the imagery in this novel. The book was very visceral, even the more philosophical imaginings of Khalid’s dream world were easy to visualize. I think this story would be a great introduction to discussing and processing identity and grief. Although great discussions happen throughout the book, I found myself wanting it to dig a little deeper to confront the prejudices. 4.5 🌟

SUPPORTING CHARACTERS: King is the main character of the book having it set through his perspective. Some of the supporting characters in this book are Jasmine, Kings best friend who turns into his girlfriend. Sandy, Kings old best friend who is a different sexuality that isn't accepted so ends up being hated. and finally Kahlid who is Kings brother that unfortunalty got killed because the color of his skin.

SETTING: At the moment, the book takes place at the Old Man's Shed on the bayou. King, the main character is hiding Sandy Sanders from his abusive dad. They are hiding here to avoid him having to go back to his toxic household. He chose to hide Sandy in the Bayou's shed because not many people know about it and it would be the last place to check, keeping him safe longer.
