Also, I'm hoping it's just in the copy I'm reading but I did *not* just read a 16-year old boy say/think "Meow" in regards to a girl being catty/competitive unironically. This book series is 100% being filed under "Grown Adult Does NOT Know How Teens Talk" even as far as teens in the early 2000s go. Unless Bobby is HELLA sarcastic and it isn't being noted

Omg Bobby training arc is taking a minute. Also, I don't know if the language evolved that much... but to see the term "bareback" and it mean shirts vs skins, not what I expected out of a 2005 YA novel

Every once and a while there's a line where I'm like UGH this is clearly YA. And it's extra dated YA to the early 2000s where the lingo and whatnot was different. Like a very cringey time capsule
