The pages of illustrations and plates really help the book come alive.

Very dry. Not well written. The author is compelled to give you the birth and death dates of almost every single person he mentions. This interrupts the flow of reading. Very annoying. He also jumps around chronologically. Banks is thirty, then a few pages later, he's in his 70s, then back to his 40s.

Great book but the author keeps making references that are awkward to read: see below pg whatever or above pg blah blah. Above? Below? Is this one long page or a book? It irritatingly interrupts the flow of the text.
