I can't believe this book hasn't mentioned scurvy yet... how can it be a part of this series without the scurvy mentions

Two things:
1) Baru is in bondage and being questioned both in the numbered chapters and in "Now" - nice parallell
2) The stories of ash continue in this book and I think they form a parallel to the later chapters of inciting civil war - stories of catastrophes, one where Falcrest failed, one where it might succeed
And as a third, I think the parallel to the note at the beginning with the Portuguese invasion

Baru’s (or should I say Barhu) back to her old tricks. She’s got some grand scheme to take trade from Falcrest and become a tyrant. Yes, she tells people she wants to be a tyrant and they’re good with that. And it seems Tain Shir is immortal because she just won’t die. At least things are exciting again.

The chapter isn't quite done, but "Splinters" :
Baru is being questioned while stuck in a confined space and water slowly poured over her. This featured a phrase like "the dog of claustrophobia liked the back of her knees" or something like that and that was just insanely good.
Also "uranium lore" for those cancer worshippers

Noooo don't give baru another chemical escape... it's bad for her, but it's really bad for everyone else... miss cormorant should NOT be on cocaine

Back to my favorite series I can recommend to nobody, because it's too complicated. But this time around I will try to take notes.
So in the prologue "Now" we get the central 'point' of this one:
Starting a civil war between the followers of Trim and the Cancreoth. Thus weakening the Oriate Mbo (am I spelling any of these correctly?).
Nice an straight forward for once; it won't stay like that, will it?

it sometimes feels like the oriati mbo culture is mary-sueified but also whatever it's nice to have some cultural element in this be, like, worth rooting for. but also woah you have multiple genders and your social system is based on generosity and kindness and the people you're fighting want to institute a eugenics program and rule your land? who should I root for here 🤔
