As we lie there, messy and weak and gulping down air, I say for the third time, “I love you.” Three times makes it magic, that’s what my mother taught me.
Finally, he responds, and he sounds achingly sad. “Don’t.” But he turns in my arms and kisses my jaw, my cheeks, my temple, again and again and again. “Griff. Don’t.”
How can I not?
