Page 102+103 -- Quote Part 2
"(...) But who would assure me that, just as I erupted into tears, I wouldn't fling in her face her responsibility, wouldn't yell with all the fury I was capable of that yes, I had done as she told me, I had looked exactly as she had told me to look, and now knew that I shouldn't have, (...)"

"Were those three young people in some way her blood, too, and therefore mine? I liked Tonino, Giuliana, Corrado, I also liked Margherita. What a pity to be the last to arrive, not to speak the language they spoke, not to have true intimacy."

...A bit tired of the constant commenting on looks being used as a narrative element.....
I understand that's how the story started, "my father said I was very ugly," and that it helps keep it cohesive. I know our main character is a teenager, and that it's more often that Roald Dahl bit (a life lived like X shows physically) than a direct comment on looks, but it's starting to give ✨physiognomy✨ regardless....

"I carefully avoided saying that Vittoria's face, to my great surprise, had seemed so vividly insolent that it was very ugly and very beautiful at the same time, and so now I was hovering between the two superlatives, puzzled."

The witch, ugliness personified (according to Giovannas parents): Aunt Vittoria.
"I looked for a few seconds at her face, without makeup, then stared at the floor. Vittoria seemed to me to have a beauty so unbearable that to consider her ugly became a necessity."
