Okay genuine question. This book is super well researched overall, almost to the point of being TOO full of historical detail, and yet... why are these educated monks talking about the work of the devil in an incredibly dualist way (like, peasants definitely would, but highly educated monks??) and also on top of that why are these characters so cautious about questioning authority? It's the 1300s not soviet russia
