I feel these past few chapters the pacing has been off. So much has been condensed into these chapters that we lost the heart of some of the big character moments for Ellie. We also keep straying between the science fiction, the political, the religious and the history, it’s quite jarring.

How Drumlin dies is both similar and dissimilar to the movie. Sabotage of the Machine in both. But it is much more complex for Ellie in the book, she's right there not in a far off control room, and he may have been trying to save her when he died.
