I’m listening to the book so I don’t have the quote, but he just talked about the importance of not calling the Union Army “The Union Army” but rather the United States Army because terms matter, and the confederacy chose to leave the U.S. and that affects how we remember the sides.

Not to just blindly support this guy, because at the end of the day he’s a white man who served and holds several positions of power, but he’s owning his racism and dissecting his past in ways that white people in academia do not do enough.

Already surprised in a good way

it’s a really interesting topic, i love how he reflects on his choices/beliefs and what made them change, as well as pointing out how the lost cause still is very much present in america today
