I lay in my berth, and he in the one above me, and it seemed as though we were back in the fo'c'sle of the barque Hedwig again, with his deep breathing to assure me of his presence, and however lightly I might speak his name he would stir, and answer me at once.

We're not belonging to the crowd of real people. They exist apart, in their true, even way of living.

'Why - what's wrong, Dick?' he said.
When he spoke to me the picture of the ringside vanished […] and he and I talking together of something that had happened long ago.
'Nothing, I said. 'It's all right - it doesn't matter any more."
'Why, he said, 'you look like a pale ghost, scared in the dim light.’

Somebody laughed at another table, and the smell of food was good. Soon it would be evening, and the lights, and more people crowding together, and outside the still air and the white sky, although it was night. I thought how splendid it all was, and how I might have been dead.

this is dragging bc even though the writing is fantastic as always, this is the first du maurier book ive read where the protagonist isn’t a woman, and dick is the embodiment of everything i hate in life; a bum, lazy, a moan and a sex rotted small brained annoying little man
