Still thorough and enjoyable, but the chapter on Stephen Frears feels extremely forced and out of place - chronologically and thematically. The only section I haven't lapped up with enthusiasm. A strange choice, though Thomson admits to Frears being a friend. Maybe the diagnosis is critical analysis as a favor?

So far: Deeply well watched and researched, hyper-dense in the vocabulary of cinema yet full of writerly elegance as it stretches the connective tissues between film's numerous eras and the megalomaniacs who steered the ship.
