Visits with Christopher Isherwood and Igor Stravinsky in Los Angeles, researching a biography on Aldous Huxley.

Sybille and her long time lover Eda Lord visit Eda's friend M.K. Fischer in San Francisco. Mary Francis viewed Sybille as too domineering with her friend Eda.

"A Legacy," Bedford's second novel, was not promoted by her publisher and received ghastly reviews. A friend of Bedford's asked her friends Evelyn Waugh and Nancy Mitford to read the book. They book loved it. Waugh wrote a rave review which led to further glowing reviews and very good sales of A Legacy.

In America, A Legacy had rave reviews and was on the bestseller lists for weeks.

"I sit before my my hostile typewriter and sicken before the abnormal effort....What is this blight I have suffered from all my life which makes trying to write such tearing, crushing, and defeating agony?"

In 1933 German exiles came to Sanary-sur-Mer and Bandol where Sybille had been living.. Joining the writer Aldous Huxley, other "literary exiles" included Thomas and Heinrich Mann, Leon Feuchtwanger, Franz Werfel, Bruno Frank, Stefan Zweig, Bertolt Brecht, Ludwig Marcuse and Alma Mahler.

Sybille found Thomas Mann pompous and conceited and Katia's (his wife) references to her husband's world fame ridiculous.
