It would be a wonderful exercise to count the scenes in the four Gospels: from some, His mercy would shine out almost blindingly. In others, we might have to look more closely, but surely His kindness and longing are at the bottom of everything. We are talking about the One who said of Himself, “Learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble of heart.”

Oh, dear Sister, I beg you, understand your little girl, understand that to love Jesus, to be His victim of love, the weaker one is, without desires or virtues, the more suited one is for the workings of this consuming and transforming Love . . . The desire alone to be a victim suffices, but we must consent to remain always poor and without strength.
