The tone of this book is lighthearted. This is shown by the way that nothing too bad happens to any of the characters you get to know. People do get hurt, but because of the world's mechanics with healing magic, as long as someone doesn't die, and even then some of the time, they can still be brought back. Fran is optimistic that she will win the tournament, even though she faces off against old friends.
