There's something really to be said about this series and the relationship between men and women.
Women are constantly being captured and rescued and being recaptured. At this point of the series, female characters have only really 'just' started to show agency.

It's very heavy in the 'ooh shiny' and 'ooh pretty' kind of male characters. Men are usually fighting each other, or professing their love.

carthoris and the imaginary man are captured and escape the green men. Thuvia is saved by Duras red men and is told she will be killed as to not start a war with the other cities of red men. Carthoris gets the Tharth people to help rescue their princess and Carthoris saves thuvia. They declare their love for each other, her fiancee hears and agrees to break their engagement so she can be with Carthoris.
