I doubt it's coincidence that the final section in this book and the previous one was funny stories. They act as a debriefing for younger readers who may feel overwhelmed by the horrors leading to that point.

It's funny..."The Brown Suit" is in the section of humorous stories, but something about it is disconcerting and disturbing, and I love it.

I sometimes hear readers say Stephen Gammell's illustrations are the only thing that makes the Scary Stories trilogy a masterpiece, but I could hardly disagree more. I love Gammell's nightmarish artwork, but Alvin Schwartz's preternatural word selection and ability to paint a gruesome or suspenseful scene is equally crucial to the series.
