I keep comparing this in my mind with Bloodlands by Timothy Snyder. That one is much more powerful and informative. This one seems less nuanced. I feel like this one has some more military information though. The personal anecdotes and quotes in this are interesting, as are the pictures.

The format & style of this book reminds me of a high school text book. That's not entirely bad, large pictures and maps are interesting. The writing style is simple & easy to read, understandable with or without prior knowledge. I have some prior knowledge and don't find it too simplistic. It feels like a frame to hang that knowledge on. The 1st hand account quotes are interesting.
