I've seen this criticized as being a white person's guide to racism. That it is speaking from privilege, that it's not as good as one by a person of color, etc. That's true.
But where I think this book shines, and how it was recommended to me, was as a white person's first introduction to racism. It's a white man's earnest effort to spark thought and awareness, and it may be more palatable for the intended audience.
