I just realized a reason I find this author so immersive, why nothing pulls me out of the story. There is no actual author presence - there is the story and the characters. You will always know Stephen King is right there with every page; there is an author in charge, who will intrude, even with editorializing. But, other than his style, Ramsey Campbell steps away, and the story does the talking. I love that choice.

This prose style is like a drug, for me. My brain reacts like it’s the ultimate high. More than Patricia Wentworth, more than Fredric Brown - more, even, than Wodehouse! - the way this guy writes is like re- attaching a missing part of my brain’s Pleasure Center after it wandered away for a while. It’s like having a special place to go, especially around Halloween.
