Status Updates From Only the Lover Sings: Art a...

Pieper’s first essay in this short book titled Work, Spare Time, and Leisure. This first appeared as a keynote address for the opening of an art exhibition. He is concerned that a society organized entirely around work risks forgetting what work is ultimately for. Leisure restores our capacity to recognize that some of the highest human goods cannot be measured by productivity, utility, or achievement.

“In short: the artist will be able to perceive with new eyes the abundant wealth of all visible reality, and, thus challenged, additionally acquires the inner capacity to absorb into his mind such an exceedingly rich harvest. The capacity to see increases.” P.36

I’m simply trying not to highlight the entire book.

“Such liberation, such foreshadowing of the ultimate and perfect fulfillment, is necessary for man, almost more necessary than his daily bread, which is indeed indispensable and yet insufficient.”

Josef Pieper quoting CS Lewis......awesome!

Is music more than mere amusement? An interesting question posed. Music reflects and molds the soul. Something to ponder.

I definitely feel like my capacity for wonder and ability to see have diminished over time. I'd like to recover that.
