It’s almost too little too late and so far as this reader is concerned, and once again, the narrative has been too front loaded to match the hind end what would’ve been a five star is no longer

The cardinal sin of an author is to stretch out the plot too long so that the reader can’t wait for the book to resolve into its happy ending. That has happened.

Back to what was in our face all the time, fear.

It is hard to swallow that Hugh is a blockhead, but apparently he is.
For him sentiment was just words. at 88% of the book gone…

“ do not expect me to love you forever when you are indifferent to me… I will not suffer for my heart to break daily. “
Who will break first her heart or Hugh?

He doesn’t kiss her when they make love anymore, this is intolerable to a reader of a romance, unless you are penning a cliffhanger

It looks like she is going to stretch this out to the last page for which I am unsatisfied

They fall into routine without the same passion as before, he kept to himself. It was a normal ton marriage.

Hugh’s response to that is masterful, and Reid once again regain her poetic footing.

George! An unlooked for stumbling block. Hugh questions why George was confident that she loved him.
So the jealousy… when she just didn’t care enough to answer him and Hugh didn’t get it

Now this is like a taffy stretch.

And all is resolved so very quickly.

At 80% of the book complete, the author has weighted the front end and left the hind completely lacking in the same finesse.

And almost likewise, my opinion of the book

She had not meant to admit her feelings, not when things felt so odd between them. “I love you, “Phoebe breathed shakily…-
Then silence and no reassurance, and here we are at the very ending of the plot. Was this to be another wait until the last page to resolve?

That Phoebe blew apart with ecstasy, and cried! “I love you” again in my opinion, was a cheap, titillating short cut. But perhaps the reader is panting themselves for steam
there had been so much delicacy in building their relationship previously, it is almost as if the author was anxious to finish the narrative..

That their first “lovemaking “was cunnilingus was beneath the author, in my opinion. Hugh’s lust, without reassurance, was poorly done of him. But it is not my book to write.

To summarize her brother, had her kidnapped and brought back to London, ignoring the fact that she is her own person at this point and happily married with child. The mother has made an appearance, and been summarily dismissed.
The brother has retreated behind the excuse that he truly loves her and was worried. Insufficient.

Well, a lot has happened. They have made love for days on end, she’s been kidnapped and brought back to London, he has followed with distrust.
Now he has found her at a ball, retrieved her, without any emotion, and has now, if they weren’t married, debauched her in the drawing room. Quickly, intently, and still without emotion.

The reader here feels a slap as certainly as Phoebe did, which is the mark of a good author
