I was afraid at first that this was turning into one of these "they owned slaves, but treated them well and humanely and the slaves didn't mind slavery". But turns out the author is developing the idea of the underlying racism that existed even in the "kindest" slave owner. I am looking forward to her addressing the world's most complicated issue in a single novel, lol.
