Great book. Got “stolen” by another library patron, so put on temporary hiatus.

Read “The Power and Weakness of God” (1946). Argues divinity had to enter history as powerless, but righteous humans should use power & violence to defend divine order against evil, rather than emulate Jesus’s example. Hmmm.

Read “Optimism, Pessimism, and Religious Faith” (1940). “The optimism of historic Hebraism and classic Christianity (except where the latter has been vitiated by a too thorough dualism) is much more robust and satisfying than the modern substitutes which have run their course.”

Read “Coherence, Incoherence, and Christian Faith” (1951). “All Renaissance and modern emphases upon the dignity of man to the exclusion of the Christian conception of the sin of man are lame efforts to reconstruct the Christian doctrine of selfhood without understanding the full implications of the Christian conception of the self's freedom.”
