I had come to that point of hard-worn confidence to be who I was, a foreign woman in a foreign place. I'd always be that.

And while the attention we received wasn't particularly negative, what started to grate was the fact that we were never, and never could be, anonymous. We could never be just another face in the crowd. Never just another family at the market.
And I never thought, never anticipated, what that might be like in Japan where 99.9% of the population did not look like me.

I would stand out in Japan, always. But I could also fit in.

The world was not getting smaller with the more we saw, but larger.
