Ch. 9 — Civil War. This is probably the best take I’ve read as far as Lincoln’s approach to the war, and the goals thereof. I was tearful by the Second Inaugural. It remains true to the title, a Land of Hope, so the author focuses on the hope of the Union, Lincoln’s primary goal. The effects are debated, the means to the end, but Lincoln saw clearly, beyond his time. 📖

Chapter 9– Pre-Civil War. Skims over presidents in 1840s/50s. Mexican War is discussed as key to increasing tension, as well as migration westward, the addition of California, changing political parties, “popular sovereignty”, integral compromises to regulate the growing problems of the day, the Dred Scott case, and the rise of Republicans and Lincoln. Maps helped context.
