CH1: right away the author doesn’t trust her reader: “Because only sons mattered in those unenlightened times” = unnecessary. Refers to “soon-to-be ex father-in-law,” but going to marital therapy. She goes to husband’s bar and he asks, “Are you back in school?” Wouldn’t he know that? Immediately confusing story architecture + too much telling not showing: Then, “I bit my lip, wondering if I would regret ..."

I honestly didn’t see the twist coming. Can’t put it down at this point.

This book is hard to put down once the protagonist gets to her family’s ancestral home.
